Understanding Foot Pain ?

Foot pain is a common condition that can affect the heel, arch, sole, toes, or the entire foot. It may arise from injury, overuse, poor footwear, or underlying medical conditions such as plantar fasciitis, arthritis, or nerve-related issues. As the foundation of movement, the feet bear the full weight of the body and are constantly under stress, making them vulnerable to both acute and chronic pain. Left untreated, foot pain can impact mobility, posture, and overall quality of life.

Common Symptoms of Foot Pain

  • Sharp or stabbing pain in the heel or arch

  • Aching or burning sensation after standing or walking

  • Swelling or tenderness in the foot or ankle

  • Difficulty bearing weight on the foot

  • Morning foot stiffness (commonly associated with plantar fasciitis)

  • Numbness or tingling

  • Visible redness, warmth, or inflammation

Common Foot Conditions We Treat

Common foot conditions can occur under various circumstances, including:

Plantar Fasciitis:

This is one of the most common causes of heel pain, especially felt with the first steps in the morning or after long periods of standing. Plantar fasciitis results from overloading the connective tissue along the bottom of the foot. We treat it through a combination of soft tissue therapy, progressive loading exercises, biomechanical correction, and advice on footwear or orthotics.

Morton’s Neuroma:

A painful condition that feels like a burning, tingling, or "pebble-in-the-shoe" sensation in the ball of the foot. It’s caused by a thickening of tissue around one of the nerves leading to your toes. Our team helps reduce irritation through manual therapy, offloading techniques, gait retraining, and strengthening. We can also work with your podiatrist who may offer shoe inserts to offload the area of pain.

Bunions (Hallux Valgus):

A bony bump forming at the base of the big toe, often accompanied by swelling, stiffness, and altered foot biomechanics. While bunions can't be reversed without surgery, we offer pain management strategies, improve joint mobility, foot and toe strength, and guide footwear choices to support comfort and slow progression.

Heel Spurs:

Often occurring alongside plantar fasciitis, heel spurs are calcium deposits that develop on the underside of the heel bone. While not always painful, they can aggravate surrounding tissue. We focus on addressing the root cause of tension and inflammation, reducing load on the plantar fascia, and improving shock absorption in the foot and leg.

Fat Pad Impingement / Atrophy:

Pain in the centre of the heel can also come from compression or thinning of the heel’s protective fat pad. We help by offloading the area, strengthening surrounding structures, using taping or heel cups where appropriate, and identifying contributing factors like poor foot biomechanics or improper footwear.

Learn More About Hip Pain

Neck pain can result from factors such as poor posture, muscle strain, whiplash injuries, or degenerative changes in the cervical spine. Osteopathy treats neck pain by using manual therapy techniques to release muscle tension, mobilize stiff joints, and restore optimal function to the neck and surrounding structures.

Osteopaths for neck pain can help by addressing underlying musculoskeletal dysfunctions, improving spinal mobility, reducing pain sensitivity, and restoring overall physical function. Osteopathic treatment aims to break the pain cycle, promote tissue healing, and enhance the body’s self-healing mechanisms.

Yes, osteopathy can be used as a preventive measure for neck pain by addressing underlying musculoskeletal imbalances, promoting proper posture and body mechanics, and providing education on ergonomic principles and self-care strategies.

Yes, stress and tension can contribute to neck pain by causing muscle tightness, stiffness, and discomfort. Osteopathy can help reduce stress-related tension in the neck and shoulders by releasing muscle tension, improving circulation, and promoting relaxation through manual therapy techniques and stress management strategies.

Osteopathic treatment for neck-related headaches and migraines can vary depending on factors like severity of symptoms, the underlying cause of the headaches, and individual response to treatment. Some people may experience significant relief after just a few sessions, while others may require more extensive treatment over time.
