Dr. Ashton Wilson

Newport Osteopath | Hypermobility & EDS/HSD Expert | Founder of Alpha Sports Medicine

DESCRIPTION

Dr Ashton Wilson is an Osteopath, strength and rehabilitation coach, educator, and the founder of Alpha Sports Medicine. With over 10 years of clinical experience, Ashton has built a reputation for working with complex musculoskeletal presentations, athletes, and individuals with connective tissue disorders, particularly Hypermobility Spectrum Disorder (HSD) and Hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS). Ashton is listed on the Ehlers Danlos Society directory of knowledgeable practitioners. Ashton also represents the mental health charity PukaUp and provides Movement workshops for corporate businesses.

Based in Newport, Victoria, Ashton works with patients across Melbourne’s inner west — including Newport, Williamstown, Yarraville, Altona, Spotswood, Seddon, Footscray and West Footscray — and also supports clients and practitioners online both nationally and internationally.

Education & Professional Foundations

Ashton began her academic journey with a Bachelor of Biomedical Science, majoring in Anatomy and Physiology, which provided a strong foundation in human structure, function, and systems-based thinking. Wanting a more hands-on and patient-focused career, she transitioned into osteopathy, completing a Bachelor of Clinical Science followed by a Master of Osteopathy.

Her commitment to ongoing education has been central to her professional development. Ashton has since undertaken extensive post-graduate training and is also a qualified Strength and Conditioning Coach and Kinetic Link Trainer, allowing her to bridge the gap between manual therapy and active rehabilitation.

This diverse educational background underpins her ability to assess the body holistically — considering biomechanics, load tolerance, nervous system function, lifestyle factors, and long-term physical capacity rather than isolated symptoms alone.

Her approach blends evidence-based osteopathic care, progressive strength and rehabilitation, nervous system awareness, and education-driven treatment, with the goal of empowering people to better understand their bodies and move with confidence.

Athletic Background & Passion for Sport

Ashton’s passion for sport and movement began early. She was a professional swimmer from the age of 13, competing at both state and national levels. Over the years, she has been involved in a wide range of sports including netball, soccer, tennis, golf, CrossFit, touch rugby, flag football and distance running.

This lived experience as an athlete deeply informs her clinical practice. She understands the physical and psychological demands of training, competition, injury, and rehabilitation — and the frustration that can come with time away from sport.

Her strong interest in rehabilitation and strength training, particularly for individuals from sporting backgrounds, allows her to tailor care that not only addresses pain but supports long-term performance, injury prevention, and resilience.

A Decade Working in High-Level & Professional Sport

Dr Ashton Wilson has worked extensively in high-level and professional sport, providing osteopathic care, injury management, rehabilitation, and game-day support. She has held roles with a number of elite sporting organisations, including:

In these environments, Ashton worked closely with athletes, coaches, strength staff and medical teams, managing acute injuries, chronic conditions, return-to-play programs, and injury prevention strategies. She is also a qualified Sports Trainer, allowing her to provide hands-on support in high-pressure sporting contexts.

This experience has shaped her clinical reasoning and reinforced the importance of individualised care, load management, and progressive rehabilitation — principles she applies equally to elite athletes and everyday patients.

Founder of Alpha Sports Medicine

Ashton founded Alpha Sports Medicine with a clear vision: to create a clinic that embraces complexity, collaboration, and evidence-based care.

Alpha Sports Medicine was built to address gaps Ashton observed in the healthcare system, particularly for patients with persistent pain, hypermobility, and conditions that don’t respond to standard treatment models. The clinic focuses on:

  • Integrated, multidisciplinary care
  • Long-term outcomes rather than quick fixes
  • Patient education and empowerment
  • Ethical, sustainable practice
  • Respect for lived experience

As director, Ashton leads by example, ensuring the clinic maintains high clinical standards while remaining approachable, inclusive, and supportive.

In-Clinic in Newport & Online Care

Dr Ashton Wilson provides care in-clinic in Newport and services the surrounding suburbs of Williamstown, Yarraville, Altona, Spotswood, Footscray and West Footscray. She also offers online consultations and coaching, supporting patients and practitioners who may not have access to specialised care locally.

This hybrid model ensures accessibility for people managing fatigue, chronic illness, travel limitations, or busy schedules.

Life Outside the Clinic

Outside of work, Ashton enjoys running, hiking, supporting her beloved Melbourne Storm and North Melbourne Football Club, travelling, boardgames with friends, and training in the gym. She has a passion for learning, so when she’s not working, she’s usually learning something about hypermobility, through books, podcasts and research papers.

SPECIAL AREAS OF INTERESTS

Hypermobility, EDS & HSD: A Clinical Special Interest

A significant focus of Ashton’s work is supporting individuals with connective tissue disorders, including Hypermobility Spectrum Disorder (HSD) and Hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS).

Hypermobility is often misunderstood, underdiagnosed, or minimised. Ashton understands the unique challenges faced by hypermobile bodies, including joint instability, persistent pain, fatigue, autonomic symptoms, and exercise intolerance.

She uses a unique combination of manual therapy and targeted exercise rehabilitation to help stabilise joints, improve proprioception, and build capacity safely. While athletes commonly affected by hypermobility include dancers and gymnasts, Ashton works with people from all backgrounds — from recreational movers to those managing chronic pain and daily functional challenges.

Her work in this area has positioned her as a trusted Hypermobility Expert, frequently supporting patients who have not found answers elsewhere.

A Special Interest in Foot & Ankle Injuries and TMJ Dysfunction

Alongside her work with hypermobility and complex pain presentations, Dr Ashton Wilson has a strong clinical passion for treating foot and ankle injuries and temporomandibular joint (TMJ) dysfunction — two areas that are frequently under-treated or oversimplified in musculoskeletal care.

The feet and jaw play a critical role in how the entire body functions. Dysfunction in either area can contribute to pain patterns far beyond the site itself, including headaches, neck and shoulder pain, hip and lower back issues, postural strain, and recurrent overload injuries.

As a Newport Osteopath, Ashton regularly works with people experiencing:

  • Plantar heel pain and plantar fasciopathy
  • Achilles tendinopathy
  • Midfoot and forefoot pain
  • Ankle instability and recurrent sprains
  • TMJ pain, clicking or locking
  • Jaw tension, headaches and facial pain
  • Neck pain linked to jaw dysfunction
  • Bruxism-related musculoskeletal symptoms

Her approach recognises that these conditions are rarely just “local problems” — they are often driven by movement patterns, load tolerance, strength deficits, breathing mechanics, stress, and nervous system regulation.

  • Improving joint control without restricting natural mobility
  • Safe, progressive loading
  • Nervous system-informed rehab
  • Education and autonomy

This model supports long-term function, confidence, and independence — whether the goal is returning to sport, managing chronic pain, or improving everyday movement.

Teaching & Educating Other Practitioners

Alongside clinical practice, Ashton is deeply involved in educating and mentoring other healthcare practitioners. She regularly teaches Osteopaths, Physiotherapists, Exercise Physiologists and allied health professionals how to work more effectively with EDS and HSD.

Her teaching focuses on:

  • Clinical reasoning for hypermobile presentations
  • Safe exercise prescription
  • Load management and pacing
  • Nervous system considerations
  • Red flags and multidisciplinary care

This practitioner education reflects Ashton’s belief that improving outcomes for hypermobile patients requires better-informed clinicians across the healthcare system.

Practitioner Mentoring & Professional Support

Ashton also offers practitioner mentoring, supporting clinicians who want to build confidence working with complex cases, persistent pain, and hypermobility.

Mentoring sessions help practitioners refine assessment skills, treatment planning, communication, and sustainable practice models, while reducing uncertainty and burnout. This work allows Ashton to extend her impact beyond individual patients and contribute to broader improvements in clinical care.
