Understanding Tennis Elbow: Signs, Symptoms & How To Get To The Root Cause

Serving Newport • Ascot Vale • Bacchus Marsh

If you’ve ever felt a sharp ache on the outside of your elbow when lifting, gripping, or even shaking hands — you might be experiencing tennis elbow, also known as lateral epicondylitis. Despite its name, this condition doesn’t just affect tennis players — it’s one of the most common overuse elbow injuries we see at Alpha Sports Medicine.

What is Tennis Elbow?

Tennis elbow occurs when the tendons that attach to the outside of your elbow (the lateral epicondyle) become irritated or overloaded. This irritation is often the result of repetitive wrist or forearm movements, common in activities like typing, gripping tools, gym workouts, or racquet sports.

Over time, with overload and stress, small microtears can develop in the tendon at the attachment point, leading to inflammation, pain, and reduced grip strength.

Why Does It Happen?

  • Repetitive strain without enough recovery
  • Muscle imbalances in the shoulder, wrist, or forearm
  • Poor ergonomics or technique (especially in sport or work settings)
  • Sudden increase in training load (especially gym-related injury)

How Our Collaboration Approach Can Help Tennis Elbow Recovery

At Alpha Sports Medicine, our multidisciplinary team works together to not only treat your symptoms but address the root cause of your pain.

Here’s how our team approach makes a difference:

Osteopaths

Our Osteopaths assess how your elbow, shoulder, and upper back are functioning together. They use hands-on techniques to reduce tension, improve mobility, and support your recovery by restoring healthy movement patterns.

Sports Chiropractors

Our Sports Chiros focus on joint mechanics and muscle balance. Through evidence-informed treatment and exercise prescription, they help improve strength, coordination, and prevent future flare-ups.

Physiotherapists

Our Physios create tailored exercise rehab programs that progressively strengthen the affected tendons, improve load tolerance, and restore function. They can also guide ergonomic changes for work or sport to prevent re-injury.

Together, we combine these approaches for a comprehensive, personalised treatment plan — ensuring you get the best of each discipline.
