Melbourne Sports Therapy

What to expect from your first Sports Therapy appointment

We need to know about you before we start any treatments so we can make sure we are supporting you as best we can. When you arrive, we’ll ask you to complete a short form, and then you’ll go into your appointment with your Sports Osteopath.

We’ll start by getting to know you better. We’ll ask a few questions and review your medical history. This information will help us understand who you are, your goals and your circumstances to help us identify what could be causing your pain or injury and determine the best way to treat it.

Next, your Osteo will use a functional screening method to assess your movement. From here, we’ll explain your diagnosis and treatment plan and treat you. Your treatment may include soft tissue massage, joint manipulation, stretching, dry needling and cupping.

We may also send you home with a series of home exercises to help you strengthen or mobilise a certain area of your body. These exercises will help you take control of your pain.

Sports Therapy FAQs

While both sports therapy and physiotherapy aim to restore function and alleviate pain, sports therapy specifically targets athletes and individuals engaged in physical activity. Sports therapists have a deeper understanding of sports-related injuries and the biomechanics of athletic performance, allowing them to tailor treatment plans to meet the unique needs of athletes.

Sports therapy can effectively treat a wide range of sports-related injuries and musculoskeletal conditions, including sprains, strains, tendonitis, ligament injuries, muscle imbalances, and overuse injuries. It also plays a crucial role in post-surgical rehabilitation and injury prevention.

Sports therapy focuses not only on treating existing injuries but also on implementing injury prevention strategies to reduce the risk of future injuries. Sports therapists may assess movement patterns, identify areas of weakness or imbalance, and develop personalised exercise programs to address these issues and improve overall performance and resilience.

Sports therapy sessions may incorporate various manual therapy techniques, such as soft tissue massage, joint mobilisation, stretching, and myofascial release. Additionally, sports therapists may prescribe specific exercises and functional rehabilitation programs to address strength, flexibility, and proprioceptive deficits.

Yes, sports therapy is suitable for individuals of all fitness levels, including non-athletes who may have sustained injuries or musculoskeletal issues related to physical activity, work, or daily life. Sports therapists can tailor treatment plans to meet the specific needs and goals of each individual.

Yes. You can use your private health at our clinic when doing an exercise rehab session with one of our Osteos or Physios at Alpha Sports Medicine.

Physiotherapy and Osteopathy are closely related. Both are AHPRA accredited Allied Health practitioners and both study for at least 3 years to get their qualifications. The conditions we treat are similar too. However, there is a difference in the approach we take to helping you heal and recover. A Physiotherapist will focus on movement and function, while an Osteopath will focus on the entire musculoskeletal system as a whole. Here at ALPHA, we work as a team to get the best outcomes we can for you.
